Hoosiers - Take Action to Stop Indiana SB 197 from Making Homelessness a Crime!   This bill makes the inability to afford housing a class C misdemeanor, which is punishable in Indiana by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. Punishing people for being homeless is cruel and makes it harder to exit homelessness. It also drives up costs by putting additional burden on jails, courts, and the police.    SB 197 could go to a House vote tomorrow morning. Transit agencies and school districts can count on being funded in every annual budget. If housing is as big a crisis as we say it is, why isn't housing funded the same way? O&M joined CSH, the Source for Housing Solutions and allies such as ACCE Institute on the Capitol steps in Sacramento to throw a press conference and rally kicking off an advocacy visit by more than 120 advocates pushing for ongoing funding, program alignment, and passage of Asm. Mike Gipson's AB1165, the Housing Justice Act. Because "housing is key" and everyone should have the keys to their own front door, we made noise with our own keychains and brought big key-shaped signs. CSH and Illinois Housing Development Authority announced the 11 development teams selected to participate in the 2025 Illinois Supportive Housing Institute. The institute is a signature CSH initiative for Illinois. It helps teams learn how to create and fund affordable housing and integrates essential services that support residents in staying healthy while maintaining their homes.
